By now everyone is aware of Puffy's legal woes. Yesterday [Thursday Jan 13th], he was indicted by a Manhatten grand jury for weapons possession. If convicted he can get up to 15 years in jail. Puff has taken the steps of OJ Simpson by putting together a legal dream team which includes Johnnie Cochran who sucessfully defended OJ and Benjamin Brafman who defended Sammy 'The Bull' Gravano who was a mafia hitman. For added good measure, Puff has reached out to the Reverend Jesse Jackson for help.. The Rev has already called the Manhatten District Attorney.. Puff is steadfastly maintaining his innocence.. While all this happening reports are pooping up showing that Puff did indeed own a gun at various points in his life. Most notable is a 1995 incident that took place in Washington DC, when Puff flashed a gun at a Georgetown campus employee. This case should be interesting... Adissa's' article..'Who's Gonna Take The Weight?' really hits home with regards to this matter..
Who’s Gonna Take the Weight?

As the dust starts to settle in the chaos that Puffy, Shyne, Jay Z and other rap artists have created for themselves, everyone has an opinion on what they should do. BET, Seagrams and other companies are spooked and don’t know if they should put money/time behind these cats anymore. And I for one don’t care. Too many rappers have abused the fame and fortune they were blessed to get. If they want to squander their funds on platinum and ice and try to get live in the clubs- I say let them. And when the po-po says "Get you ass in jail!"- I ain’t trippin’.
As far as sponsors and backers go, white owned companies will pour their money behind black artists as long as they keep going gold and platinum. You think Seagrams and Arista give a rats ass about Puffy and Jay Z?! Hell NAW!! They in this for the cream- ya heard?!
But the point I really wanted to throw out there was this..........If these TV and radio stations, financial backers, etc., (black or white owned) pull money and time away from the Puffy’s, Shynes’ and Jay-Z-’s of the world, who will they put in behind now? If they are concerned about improper acts made by rap cats, will they support the legit MC’s now?
Will BET and MTV put more Common Sense, Poor Righteous Teachers, Roots and Black Star in rotation? Will KMEL and Wild 94.9 (the top radio stations in the Bay Area) give Planet Asia and Rasco’s "Cali Agents" or Encore’s "Water World" more air time? Will we see these companies back Dead Prez and The Coup world tours? Again I say, HELL NAW!!
Take note my fellow Hip Hop lovers. These corporations care not. These same liquor companies that used rappers to have you buy 40’ies, Alize (Did I spell that right?), Crystal and St. Ides leave those same artists in the dirt as soon as they do stupid stuff (despite the fact most were under the influence of their products when they did their dirt). Puffy, Jay Z and others have their work cut out for them. If it’s Allah, Jesus or whoever/whatever, I really hope they get the spiritual/social help they need to get right. But these companies who claim to be concerned have some work to do to. Let’s wait and see who REALLY love’s Hip Hop. See you on the ave.......
